Details of Late Georgian Fireplaces

Georgian carved timber fire surround

Not something we see very often, and not something that is generally allowed to be removed from a property nowadays, but this was removed some years ago from a property in the centre of edinburgh where it had itself been installed at some time in the late '50's, and so permission was granted to have it removed. I seem to remember it might have been Forth St?
Ordinarily these fires are made of pine with all the detailing done in Gesso, but this one is all carved timber which makes it a lot more impressive and means that it has survived the last 200 -250 years relatively well, though it does have the odd knock here and there and could do with a good clean-will those dark blotches come out?
There is some speculation as to whether it has had its height reduced a bit at some stage as these fires are often a little taller too.
But its the only one of these we'll have for many a year i'll bet.
