Details of Victorian Fireplaces

Grand fire surround

Ideally this should be painted as its made from a timber called Deal or American Walnut, its basically a cheap version of mahogany and if you dip it, it goes a grainless grey colour and if you strip it by hand, its quite nice but needs a lot of sanding to show up the grain, and its just too detailed a thing to do by hand-though I would strip the edge of the shelf where the groove between the 2 beads has been filled in. It came from a large detached house in Stirling.
I personally think it looks better painted white, I think it brings out the detail more, sometimes I feel that on carved fires, you lose some of the effect where the grain is competing with the pattern.
Shown with a nice large insert (with rather high set front bars) measuring 44 inches wide by 40.5 tall.
