Details of Victorian Fireplaces

Apparently this fire came from a big house in London before coming north and spending many years in a garage outside Lanark. Painted white and looking a little tired, this is how we like to get them, so we can see the ugly duckling to swan transformation*, it makes the work, of which there was rather a lot on this one, more worthwhile.I would say it dates to the 1880's and looks terrific. Mahogany and walnut are 2 woods which can look remarkably similar, both being a rich dark brown.
* Am I the only one who actually finds ducklings look a lot nicer than swans? certainly less bad tempered.
